Dastangoi is one of Urdu literature's oldest performance traditions — a solo oral art form in which a dastan (epic tale) is told from memory, without notes, sometimes for hours. At its peak in the Mughal courts of the 16th century, a skilled dastango could narrate for days without repeating a sentence.
A dastan is not a linear story. It is a constellation of stories nested inside each other — a narrative within a narrative within a narrative — each layer adding texture and meaning to the ones around it. The genre celebrates digression as a form of depth.

By the mid-20th century, dastangoi had nearly vanished. The last great dastango, Mir Baqar Ali, died in 1928. For decades, the form existed only in manuscript. Then, in 2005, Mahmood Farooqui and Danish Husain revived it — performing in cramped Delhi drawing rooms, then auditoriums, then Netflix specials.
India's spice trade routes were the arteries through which culture, story, and cuisine moved. The same routes that brought black pepper from Kerala to Persia carried back saffron to Gujarat, cardamom from Malabar to the Ottoman court, and cloves from Maluku through Calicut to London. Every spice blend is a compressed history of these movements.
Daastaan is not a nostalgia project. It is an argument that mass-production destroyed something irreplaceable — not just in food, but in the knowledge systems that surrounded it. The women who maintained household spice protocols did not write them down. They lived them, and when the convenience product arrived on supermarket shelves, that transmission broke.
